• For well over a decade, Susan has mentored and tutored writers on a private basis in person, by email, post, phone and Skype. She often works intensively with advanced students who may be engaged in writing a full-length poetry collection or novel but she equally enjoys working with beginners, offering prompts and exercises to kick-start the writing process.
  • For a nine-year period, she also taught Creative Writing Online through the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Cardiff University.
  • Over a period of four years, she worked for trAce, the online writing school at Nottingham Trent University, designing and delivering courses, facilitating the online workshop and offering one-to-one tuition to more advanced students.
  • Susan has also tutored adult students by post for the Open College of the Arts’ Starting to Write course.

If you are interested in one-to-one private tuition, mentoring or manuscript appraisal, in person, by email, phone or Skype, please contact Susan for further information.

What some of the writers whom Susan has mentored have said:

Successful writing is all about margins: a wrong word or phrase in an otherwise good piece can throw the reader and lose them entirely; as such, gaining objective, expert feedback is essential for writers. This is exactly what Susan Richardson has provided me with during the last five years on my first three poetry collections (Nocturnes, Lowland, The Painters Who Studied Clouds). She really studies the draft pieces and thinks about what (and what not) to comment on before providing challenging but always supportive feedback. I trust Susan’s judgement and would recommend her review service to anyone – Will Kemp

Susan has been my online poetry mentor since March 2013. During this time she has been an excellent (and eagle-eyed!) critic. Her comments are always constructive, and her encouragement has kept me going and given me the incentive to develop my writing skills. The flexibility of our arrangement is a godsend as I no longer have time to follow regular writing courses.  Thank you, Susan – also for your workshops which I have thoroughly enjoyed and which have been great learning experiences – Patricia Wilson

My writing apprenticeship with Susan Richardson started in class at Llanover Hall and developed online. Her facilitative style of encouraging critique inspires creativity while paying acute attention to detail. Her class enabled me to learn experientially and explore my potential in different writing forms. Online I received constructive feedback that motivated me to finish one book and start another. Susan Richardson has been my creative writing mentor on writing courses and on an individual basis over the last six years. She has helped me to hone my skills and experiment with prose, including autobiography, travel writing, monologues, and  poetry. She offers her comments in a positive and clear way, encouraging me to work on my writing efforts and take them in directions I had not previously thought of. I am so glad that I found her – Elizabeth Jones
