Over a number of years, Susan regularly co-led, with shamanic practioner Sarah Howcroft, writing and shamanic journeying workshops in the Brecon Beacons National Park.

In 2017, Sarah tragically died: Susan continues to deeply miss her friendship and inspiration.

The workshop that they most enjoyed co-running was Tracking the Wild. A description of its content and structure follows to offer an insight into their innovative approach, and the fun and creativity that were generated.

Tracking the Wild

In this workshop, we will be spending time outdoors, exploring the local landscape from the point of view of the wildlife tracker – discovering animal tracks, movements and energetic pathways. Later, when we move indoors, under the guidance of Sarah and the driving force of the shamanic drum, you will be gently invited to take imaginary journeys to explore for yourself the worlds of ancient shamanic cosmology, with the opportunity to meet your own power animals. This can be a profoundly moving, transformative, surprising and often funny experience, rich in story and imagery.

With Susan’s support and innovative writing exercises, you will then use these experiences to inspire and develop your stories and poetry in exciting new ways, taking your writing in directions you may never have imagined. You will leave with a whole range of fresh skills for finding inspiration, plenty of valuable feedback on what you’ve created, plus some highly original pieces of writing.

The group will kept be small and intimate for this very special workshop.

The venue is in the village of Talybont on Usk, near Brecon. It’s accessible by bus from Brecon town and Abergavenny railway station, and there are lovely walks, places to eat, B&Bs and a beautiful campsite. You will be sent full directions on booking, and a local accommodation list is also available.
