Another enjoyable reading, at the Imperial Hotel in Merthyr Tydfil, last night. I was guest poet at the monthly reading series that’s held there, part-funded by the Borough Council and organised by prolific local poet and editor Mike Jenkins.

Had such a warm welcome and once again, really enjoyed listening to the open mic section of the evening – some first-time readers alongside the more experienced. An eighty-year-old jazz drummer – veteran of umpteen Brecon Jazz Festivals – who took up writing performance poetry at the age of seventy-nine! A maths whizz who confessed that he’s ‘never read a book in his life’ but who nevertheless shared some of his beautiful, evocative nature poetry. Two young men who were attending a poetry event for the first time and who will ‘definitely’ be back for more next month. Wonderful to come across such enthusiasm for the written and spoken word in this valleys community – even the venue was doing the literary activist thing, with poetry anthologies on sale behind the bar!
