BayLit is happening in Cardiff at the moment and on Wednesday evening I went along to the opening event of the festival – the Poetry Translation Centre’s World Poets’ Tour featuring Choman Hardi (reading the poems of Kajal Ahmed from Kurdistan), Farzenah Khojandi from Tajikistan and Somali poet-performer Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac ‘Gaariye’. It was a superb event – wonderful to hear the poets (all of whom are leading literary figures in their respective countries) read in their original languages, as well as the inspired and sensitive English translations.

The event took place in a lovely venue too – regular readers of this blog will know I’m a big cafe aficionado and this was in one of Cardiff’s best – Kemi’s Cafe, adjacent to a craft centre and gallery, and purveyor of a big range of drool-inducing cakes!
